On Sunday August 18th the North Shore of Long Island was hit with a Torrential rain storm dumping approx 10 inches of rain into Rocky Point / Shoreham area in 4 hours. Approx 1 a.m. the dept started receiving multiple civilian assist alarms ranging from flooded basement to people trapped in their cars taking on water at an unprecedented rate taxing the dept resources. Chief -30 was faced with keeping units in all areas of the dist to handle the calls. At the height of the storm Chief-30 received a call for a home taking on water with people trapped. With this incident in hand the company officer's from the responding units took proactive initiatives to handle the lower priorities leaving the chief staff to handle the severity of the people trapped. C-30 initiated operations for water bourn emergencies. C-32 was to over see rescuers while C-31 was assigned to operations. Members from Co.1 using water rescue equipment secured ropes and swam to the home. Once inside they secured the civilians and brought them to safety.. Due to limited resources the Sound Beach FD was requested to send a boat along with the Brookhaven FD water rescue team. The department’s volunteer and paid EMS staff was on hand to address any injuries. The dept handled over 30 alarms from midnight to 5 am along with continued into the day.
