History
Prior to the 1930s, the nearest firefighting organizations were located in Port Jefferson and Riverhead. The North Shore Beach Fire Department was founded on October 31st, 1930 by William J. Jones, a New York City police detective and member of the North Shore Beach Property Owners Association. A few years later, the Rocky Point Fire Department was founded by Joseph A. Edgar, a principal and teacher at Rocky Point’s public school on February 6, 1934.
From 1934 to 1949 the North Shore Beach Fire Department and Rocky Point Fire Department averaged 8 and 58 members, respectively. By the end of the 1940s the North Shore Beach Fire Department had responded to 38 calls, while the Rocky Point Fire Department responded to 39.
In 1956, the Brookhaven Town Supervisor proposed the two fire departments merge. On April 15, 1957, North Shore Beach Fire Department became a part of the Rocky Point Fire Department. The Rocky Point Fire Department’s firehouse was deemed Company 1, and the North Shore Beach Fire Department’s firehouse (relocated from Prince and Condor Road to King Road in 1953) became known as Company 2. By the end of the year the department had 108 active members, and in 1959 the Shoreham Fire Company 3 and Fire Police Company 4 were founded. Then in 2008, our EMS Company #5 was founded.
As of the close of 2015, the Rocky Point Fire Department has approximately 130 active members serving the communities of Rocky Point and Shoreham. The number of calls answered in 2015 totaled 1,986 (1,448 EMS calls, and 538 fire calls).
